San Miguel de Allende is a colonial town in the highlands of Mexico, with a population of 60,000 including about 5,000 expatriate North Americans and Europeans. San Miguel was founded in 1542 and grew rich on the silver trade during the 17th and 18th centuries.
Today San Miguel is a cosmopolitan cultural and artistic center, and a mecca for artists and educated travelers. Generations of North Americans have attended the famous Instituto Allende and other art and learning institutions.
